Keiki Program: Connecting Youth with Hawaiian Traditions

Paddling children in a race

In the Hawaiian language, keiki (pronounced “kay-kee”) means child or youth, symbolizing growth, learning, and the spirit of discovery. At Kikaha o Ke Kai, our Keiki Program offers young paddlers an opportunity to experience Hawaiian culture and values through the tradition of outrigger canoe paddling.

Our program warmly welcomes all families and youth, regardless of background, experience, or connection to Hawai‘i. Whether you have Hawaiian roots, simply love Hawaiian culture, or just feel a deep connection to the water, you have a place in our paddling ‘ohana (family).

Beyond teaching paddling skills, our Keiki Program is designed to build confidence, teamwork, and cultural understanding. Through traditional chants, stories, and paddling techniques passed down from generation to generation, young paddlers develop a powerful sense of identity and belonging. For keiki growing up far from their ancestral homeland, paddling serves as a bridge connecting them directly to their heritage.

Benefits of our Keiki Program include:

  • Developing leadership, resilience, and teamwork skills.
  • Building friendships and meaningful community connections.
  • Deepening understanding of Hawaiian history, traditions, and values.
  • Enhancing physical fitness and paddling proficiency.
  • Strengthening self-esteem through cultural education and shared experiences.

We welcome everyone with open arms. Bring your keiki and discover the joy and spirit of paddling together.
